This morning sawthe McCain – Palin campaign rally in Virginia Beach and it was awesome! So awesome in fact, that I’m going to tell you about our experience.
My mom showed up to sit the boy around 7:30am so the wife and I could get off to an early start to the convention center.
When we hit the highway we noticed the traffic signs saying the convention center’s lots were full and were directing travelers to Camp Pendleton to park. Well heck with that, we figured we’d find a parking place somewhere nearby.
Now let me tell you, there was a lot of traffic heading to the beach this early in the morning, so you knew something was going on.
Then we crested a small rise in the road where highway appeared pretty much stopped about 2 miles from the convention center exit. Holy crap! We jumped off the highway and shot down some back roads to get there.
Within about 1 1/2 mile of the center we saw people walking in droves toward the center and police manually operating traffic lights. Damn, are you kidding me? It’s just after 8am and the program doesn’t start until 10am and people are walking this far already!
We call my F-I-L and let him know about the craziness since we’re going to meet up with he and his wife. It’s nuts, I can’t believe all the traffic and people walking. It was as if we were at the oceanfront on a nice summer weekend. My F-I-L tell us they are on their bikes and heading to the center.
We finally get close after sitting through a few light cycles watching more and more people walking to the site. Then we see the road to the center is closed! GTFO! And more people walking from the other direction.
Well, we finally verbalize what we both had been thinking, “Maybe we should get some breakfast and head home to our little one and watch it on TV.” So that’s what we did.
We called my F-I-L and let him know and that we’d keep an eye out for them on the tube.
No, we didn’t see them, but they had quite an experience. It turns out the line they waited in started at a famous local gym several blocks away. The line from the other direction was about 1/4 mile long as best he could tell when he got to the front of the building.
So, sitting at home on our couch, with our, son we watched with envy as our friends and neighbors had a blast at the rally. They were even entertained by Hank Williams, Jr. sporting a Redskins jersey.
I wish we’d had just sucked it up and gone. The speeches were great and the crowd was fully into it chanting, “Nobama”, “drill, baby, drill”, and “John McCain” over and over.
Let’s keep Virginia red!
