This is crazy, a little 12 yr old girl was called a racist by her classmates for wearing a pink McCain – Palin t-shirt to school, My Fox Orlando reports. Talk about peer pressure.
Contrary to what you may think, there are two positives in the article, one is her expressing her freedom of speech. She’s only 12 and realizes she has that right. She’s obviously a pretty smart girl.
The second good thing I noticed was the reaction of her parents. Because of trial lawyers we’ve become a terribly litigious society, yet her parents weren’t even mad. They want all the students to learn how to express their opinions constructively. Pretty smart people.
This was a prime opportunity for the teacher to discuss rights, common sense, and what racism really is and isn’t. I have a feeling the teacher missed this wonderful chance to engage the students in something timely that obviously had their attention.
Of concern to me is the reaction to the shirt from other students. Who taught these children to say someone is racist because they’re wearing a shirt with a message they disagree with? What type of parents would do that to their child? And what type of parent would let their kid say that about a classmate in the first place?
Those are the parents that aren’t teaching their children proper civil discourse. Those are the type of parents that encourage racial division, not harmony.
Just imagine the fevered outcry that would have spewed forth had that girl called a black kid in her class racist because the kid was wearing a “X” shirt. I bet they’d be threatening lawsuits and calling for her suspension.
It’s sad that those kids are learning to divide themselves racially at such a young age because of their parents.
