I wrote here why I cancelled my subscription to the Virginian Pilot, and here’s an update that just reinforces my belief that I did the right thing.
Today’s A1 had a full color, full banner article on Barack Obama’s visit to Norfolk yesterday. To make it even worse, reading the article you’d think the writer was on some euphoric high. Lot’s of love in the article.
A couple of weeks ago an editorial writer actually defended the Pilot’s location of articles pertaining to candidates. She compared excellent coverage of Obama’s visit to Newport News, a city not in the core of the Pilot’s coverage and has it’s own paper, to that of McCain’s visit to Virginia Beach, a city that is in the core of the Pilot’s subscription base.
McCain’s visits – somewhere in the paper. Obama’s visits – right in your face.
I responded to the above referenced article at 2pm on the button. It hasn’t been “approved” as of now, yet 5 others posted after mine have been approved.
This is what I’m waiting for, nothing bad, but I did cancel my subscription.
Obama’s visit on front page

I commented on your coverage of the McCain-Palin rally and where it was located in the paper, not on A1.
In the Op-Ed section a couple of weeks later the location of articles on the candidates was argued by an editor to be fair.
Now Obama gets this full color front page, full banner placement for his latest visit.
I’m glad I cancelled my subscription when it’s set to renew in a couple of weeks.
This was blatantly biased.
You have the info so we all can watch together to see if it gets approval.
Edit: It’s 4:39 out here, so it’s been over 2 and a half hours and my comment is still waiting approval.
Edit #2: It’s 6:49 and I see my comment finally got approved. I do find it interesting that my comment wasn’t approved until it would not appear on the first page.
Again, I apologize to D.
