The wife, children and I swung by the No Frill Grill in the Ghent section of Norfolk yesterday for an early dinner. We got there around 5pm which was great because we didn’t have to fight traffic getting back to Virginia Beach and the restaurant only had about 3 tables seated.
The waitress was at our side right away and was attentive to all our needs.
We started off with artichoke dip with pita points. This was really good. I was expecting the artichoke to be minced, but it wasn’t. There were nice big pieces and the whole thing was topped with melted and browned cheddar cheese. The down side was that it was smoking hot. Too hot. I spent the rest of the afternoon dealing with pieces of falling pallet, if you know what I mean.
For meals the 6 yr old had nuggets and crinkle fries. She liked them. What’d you expect, right?
The boy had garlic mashed potatoes which he didn’t like. Like father, like son I guess because I’m not a big fan of them either because the garlic is usually overpowering.
My wife had some salad thing that she enjoyed.
I had the Reuben with black beans and fries. Where to begin here… The fries were fries and the black beans were about as bland as any I’ve ever had. I think they just dumped half a can of beans in a small bowl, topped it with very little cheese and warmed in the oven. Salt didn’t help these beans.
Now the sandwich was a different story. I had the kraut put on the side because I’m not a big fan of it and I wanted to control how much I had. The sandwich was fantastic…
I chowed down half and was working on the other half when the meal hit the skids. I took a bite and low and behold a long dark hair came with the food. I nearly lost it. The entire meal almost came back up!
My wife didn’t want me to say anything, so I went against my instincts and didn’t. No need for the wife to get pissed at me over a damn hair in my food that ruined my meal, right?! Sucked.
While the food was good and moderately priced, I’ll find it hard to visit again. Really, the good meal was completely ruined for me.
